It’s so funny to me looking back on what I used to think about essential oils – before I knew the first thing about them. I saw essential oils as a fragrance, a luxury. Something that we put in candles to make them smell better. I might have even thought they were a little bit silly.
I definitely didn’t view them as what they are: plant medicine.
Through working with my own doTERRA wellness advocate, reading books, and taking classes, over the last two years a whole new world has opened up to me.
I discovered that there are essential oils that can be used to treat virtually everything under the sun. And through exploring these essential oils my physical and emotional health started to improve.
I can honestly say that I have never felt physically better than I have after I started to incorporate these oils into my life.
Essential oils are now a must-have in my home. Not a day goes by without me using my oils at least once.
So if you’re brand new to essential oils and you need some good recommendations, here are my suggestions to get you started.
These are the top 10 essential oils that I would recommend to absolutely anyone!

This list is in no particular order, but from the moment I started writing this post, I knew that Frankincense would be the first one I had to share. Frankincense might actually be the essential oil that I use the most! Here’s why:
The coolest thing about “Frank-i-baby” (as my friend Jen calls it), is that frankincense actually enhances whatever you blend it with, so it works better! It doesn’t matter which oils you’re using, if you incorporate one drop of frankincense, you will experience better results.
The next reason why I love frankincense is because it’s a universal essential oil, meaning it can do virtually anything. There’s even a saying in my essential oil community where people say, “when in doubt, use frankincense.” This oil can be used whether it’s for your spiritual practice, mental and emotional well-being, or for any physical health concerns. It’s also a power house oil that is often used to help people with extreme illnesses like cancer.
So if you’re new to essential oils and not quite sure what to do with them, get this one and you can’t go wrong.
As if this oil couldn’t get any better, frankincense gets rid of scars (especially acne scars!) and redness on the skin! This beauty trick is commonly known in the oil community, but even I didn’t believe it until I saw the results myself when a friend of mine shared before and after pictures of using frankincense on her face twice a day for two weeks.
In just two weeks the frankincense was able to get rid of about 85% of her acne scars that had been there even since she was in high school. So, I decided to try this trick myself! And now, all of the red spots that used to be on my face and arms are GONE! (In less than two weeks for me.) On top of that it removes redness from hyperpigmentation on the skin after just one or two uses.
Although this is one oil that’s considered to be “expensive,” it always makes me laugh when people say that because if women only knew how effective frankincense was (especially for their skin) they would have saved THOUSANDS of dollars on skincare products and beauty treatments. Just saying … *sips tea*
And last but not least, if you’re still not convinced that this oil is the bomb, frankincense literally smells like a spa. Whenever I have it on my body while I’m out, I regularly have people walking up to me and telling me that I “smell like a spa.” Their words, not mine! And who wouldn’t want to smell like a spa?
If you’re an athlete or just an active person in general, or if you struggle with asthma, peppermint is definitely an oil that you should be paying attention to.
This opens the airways quickly and lets more air move in and out of your lungs, decreasing resistance in the respiratory airway and increases airflow to the lungs. Bronchodilators also help remove mucus from your lungs. All of this means that peppermint is extremely helpful for people who suffer from asthma, but it’s also an incredible tool for anyone who is active, an athlete or works out regularly.
(If you struggle with asthma, make sure to also check out doTERRA’s blend Breathe. I have doTERRA clients that tell me they were able to stop using inhalers because of how effective Breathe oil is for asthma symptoms).
When you dilate the airways, your body is able to take in more oxygen. More oxygen means that your body is able to perform better. My boyfriend and I both noticed this the day we started using peppermint before we would leave for the gym. Because we were taking in more oxygen, we both noticed that we are able to run farther, lift more weight than usual, and exercise for longer periods of time!
And I think it goes without saying that anything that increases your workout performance that much, also helps you get in shape and reach your fitness goals faster!
Additionally, peppermint oil also gives you a burst of energy and makes you feel more awake especially due to how potent it is. Just one drop of doTERRA’s peppermint oil equals 28 cups of peppermint tea!
Another reason why I like to keep this oil around at all times, is because it helps to alleviate pain from headaches and menstrual cramps. In my experience, it doesn’t completely take away the pain, but it makes it much less painful and more manageable. Plus, the cooling and tingling sensation is comforting.
Lastly, I can speak from experience that peppermint improves your mood and makes you feel happier. Although many essential oils have similar emotional effects like this, I find that the emotional benefits of peppermint are much more potent than many other oils probably because peppermint is such a powerful scent.
Emotionally, peppermint oil brings joy and buoyancy to the heart and soul and helps individuals who are feeling disheartened, discouraged, or pessimistic rediscover the joy in life.
3) Deep Blue
Deep Blue is by far a Holy Grail essential oil for me and one that I wouldn’t be able to live without. This doTERRA blend is best known for its ability to reduce pain and inflammation in the body.
If you have a kink in your neck, sore muscles from working out, or knots in your back that are causing you pain, Deep Blue is going to be your lifesaver.
I used to have a basket in my house of over a dozen holistic or CBD pain relief sprays and creams that I was able to get rid of after I discovered Deep Blue. It’s incredibly effective at reducing pain and inflammation after just a few minutes, AND it’s long lasting.
Lastly, because this essential oil is so good at reducing pain, it’s also known for creating very calming effects in your mind and body, which is why I also use it to treat anxiety.
The Serenity essential oil blend by doTERRA is what my friend Jen and I refer to as my “spirit oil.”
I go through one or two bottles of this oil every month, because not only is it my favorite oil, but since I first used it, I’ve been very emotionally and spiritually connected to it. And trust me, once you explore essential oils enough, you’ll find your spirit oil too!
One of the reasons why I love this oil so much is because of the scent of it. The main ingredient in Serenity oil is lavender, making it a very lavender-forward oil. The other oils incorporated include cedarwood, ho wood, Ylang Ylang, marjoram, Roman chamomile vetiver, vanilla bean, and Hawaiian sandalwood. When blended together, create a very calming, spa-like, aroma that I can’t get enough of.
The oil smells so lovely, that it’s my signature scent and I use it every day as a perfume. Everyone loves the smell of this oil and everywhere I go I have people compliment me and tell me how good I smell. Even when I’ve worn Serenity to the gym!
As far as the benefits of Serenity oil, Serenity is called the “restful blend” and is known for being very calming, relaxing, and grounding so it helps primarily with sleep and anxiety.
My boyfriend and I both noticed how Serenity helped us to relieve anxiety within the first week of using it and now we regularly apply it to our chest as needed, and diffuse it in our bedroom at night.
If you’re someone who suffers from anxiety or has trouble sleeping, I highly suggest adding this essential oil to your kit, or you can just get it to enjoy the aroma!
Another oil that I highly recommend everyone have on hand is ginger oil primarily because it helps with upset stomach and nausea. In my family, we’ve always been prone to nausea, so we always had several ginger products on hand for when we needed them. Candies, soda, drops, you name it.
Now that I’ve found ginger essential oil, I’ve been able to get rid of all of that since ginger oil is much more potent and effective than the sugary ginger products I used to buy.
Ginger oil empowers people to take full responsibility for their life circumstances, to break free from a victim mindset, to take action on what’s important to them, and to be a fully present and participant in their life.
For this reason, I love to incorporate this oil into my homemade essential oil roller bottle blends (Wild Manifestations Blend is available for purchase here) to help encourage and empower my readers and clients to take powerful action in their lives.
If you want to try this oil out yourself, just be aware that this oil packs a lot of heat and should be diluted with a carrier oil before applied topically!
6) On Guard
Next up is doTERRA’s On Guard blend, known as the “protective blend.” Which is a perfect way to describe this oil as its best known for immune support and powerful cleaning properties.
On Guard boosts your immune system, helps you to not get sick, and prevents seasonal allergies from turning into sicknesses. In my case, I’ve also noticed that when I use On Guard it helps me to recover from sickness quicker.
I even take this oil with me on vacation (especially on trips to cities with a lot of sightseeing and public transportation) so that I don’t get sick. If you’re also someone who struggles with a low immune system, this oil will most likely become your Holy Grail product.
For best results I recommended using this oil internally, topically, and aromatically.
For topical use, apply a drop of the oil to the bottom of your feet and rub in, or dilute with fractionated coconut oil in a roller bottle for easy application.
For aromatic use, place several drops of the essential oil in a diffuser. The amount of drops depends on your diffuser, how much water you use, and personal preference. I would recommend starting with 4-5 drops and going from there. You can also place a drop of the oil in the palms of your hands and inhale deeply through your nose for 1 minute.
Because On Guard also makes a powerful surface cleaner, I use several drops of the essential oil in my homemade bathroom cleaner along with water, baking soda, Dr. Bronner’s castile soap, and several drops of tea tree oil. This bathroom cleaner not only smells amazing but is even more effective than the store bought cleaners that I used to use.
Because this blend is so effective and is a fan favorite, doTERRA has a string of On Guard products including supplements, detergent, soap, toothpaste (which I’m obsessed with), mouthwash, sanitizer, cough drops, and more.
And if you’re still not convinced at how amazing this blend is, it also smells like “christmas in a bottle” as my friend Jen would say. Ingredients include Wild Orange Peel, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Leaf, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus Leaf, and Rosemary Leaf and Flower essential oils. Personally, with how spicy this blend smells, it reminds me a bit of my chai tea lattes.

Can you really create a top ten essential oil list without including lavender? I’m pretty sure it would be considered a crime.
My favorite way to use lavender oil is primarily for skin care and aromatherapy. I use this oil along with Tea Tree and frankincense whenever I have a scrape or some kind of skin irritation. I also love to mix it in with vitamin E oil or coconut oil for my skin.
Because the aromatic benefits of lavender make me feel very calm and relaxed, I create a room spray with lavender and Ylang Ylang, I put lavender oil on our bed sheets, and I mix it in with my bath salts.
Another way I love to use lavender is in my morning coffee. When I want to create a more “special” cup of coffee for myself, I put one drop of lavender in my iced coffee, along with some honey and almond milk.
I highly suggest lavender oil to anyone to get because it has countless uses and benefits, but it’s also a very simple and fun oil for people to play with.
8) Ylang Ylang
Many times when I’m using lavender, I also mix in a little bit of Ylang Ylang as well which makes the smell softer, sweeter, and more enjoyable.
This is very similar to peppermint oil and lavender oil in that the emotional benefits are very obvious when you first smell the oil. As far as the emotional benefits of this oil, Ylang Ylang is considered to be “the oil of the inner child.”
This oil connects us with our inner child, powerfully helps us to release emotional trauma, assists people with bottled up feelings of anger or sadness, opens up the heart chakra, assists in connecting us to our intuition, and reminds us to tap into joy, pleasure, and playfulness.
The feelings of joy, playfulness, happiness, and innocence come through for me the moment I smell this oil, and I instantly feel better. I rarely use this oil for physical healing, although it does have physical benefits, since Ylang Ylang is a very emotional oil for me.
9) Tea Tree
Tea tree is another oil that I’m pretty sure would be illegal to not mention on a top ten oil list, and for obvious reasons.
Tea tree oil (just like lavender oil) has natural disinfecting, antiviral, and anti-fungal properties. Which is why I use them in combination with frankincense and lavender for cuts and scrapes, hangnails, rashes, ingrown toenails, skin irritation, etc.
For this reason, tea tree oil is also very helpful for people struggling with acne or trying to get rid of a blemish quickly and naturally, or even prevent acne from forming.
Another cool beauty trick that I’ve discovered is that many people find success removing skin tags with tea tree oil by applying some oil to the skin 2 or 3 times a day until it falls off.
Start playing with tea tree a bit at home and it will most likely surprise you how many ways this oil can come in handy and even replace many of your household items.
Last but not least, doTERRA’s Tamer Blend deserves a spot on my top 10 list.
Partially because I’m obsessed with the sweet, spearmint scent that reminds me of my favorite Orbit gum and always uplifts my mood very similarly to Ylang Ylang.
But the real reason why this oil makes my top 10 list is because I love to use it topically for my digestive health.
Many people who struggle with digestive problems find the most success with doTERRA’s DigestZen blend, but because we are also bio-individual, I didn’t find that much success with that oil. Instead, I started using Tamer, which is a much more pleasant smelling oil that was created for children who require smaller amounts of essential oils and more dilution with carrier oils.
I apply this oil on my stomach after dinner or a big meal, especially if I’m having any sort of stomach upset and gently rub it in. Not only does it smell delicious, but the Spearmint and Peppermint oil feels cooling and refreshing and it helps to alleviate my symptoms and any bloating rather quickly.
If you’re someone who struggles with stomach upset, this oil will be a great addition to your oil cabinet. I also would highly recommend doTERRA’s Probiotics, Digestive Enzymes, and Peppermint Capsules especially for people struggling with IBS.
